THE DANGEROUS ASSUMPTION THAT SOFTWARE IS A COMMODITY
Lately I've been hearing the same statement over and over:
"Software is a commodity."
It's catchy.
It's popular.
It's also a dangerous assumption.
Yes, software features can become commodities.
AI models can become commodities.
Code can become commodities.
But great software never has.
Why?
Because customers don't buy software.
They buy outcomes.
They buy confidence.
They buy speed.
They buy better decisions.
They buy transformation.
A calculator is a commodity.
A CFO is not.
A database is a commodity.
The insights hidden inside that data are not.
An AI model may become a commodity.
But the proprietary knowledge, operating system, workflows, and business methodology built on top of that AI are not.
That's where too many founders get it wrong.
They assume that because everyone has access to AI, every AI company will become interchangeable.
History tells a different story.
Everyone had access to the internet.
Very few built Google.
Everyone had access to e-commerce.
Very few built Amazon.
Everyone had access to cloud computing.
Very few built Salesforce.
Technology became available.
Execution created the advantage.
The question isn't whether software is becoming a commodity.
The question is whether you've built something competitors can't duplicate.
Can they copy your thinking?
Can they copy your methodology?
Can they copy your customer relationships?
Can they copy your operating system?
Can they copy your experience?
Can they copy your reputation?
Features can be copied.
Wisdom cannot.
Code can be replicated.
Trust cannot.
Technology can be purchased.
Leadership cannot.
The winners of the AI era won't simply build software.
They'll build businesses that combine technology with proprietary intelligence, disciplined execution, and extraordinary customer outcomes.
That's what creates lasting value.
