The decision in front of you may be asking for courage—not more research.

The point is brutally simple: refusing to decide is still a decision.

The point is brutally simple: refusing to decide is still a decision.

Buridan’s Donkey is a famous philosophical thought experiment about the danger of indecision.

A hungry and thirsty donkey stands exactly halfway between a pile of hay and a bucket of water. Because the donkey cannot find a logical reason to choose one over the other, it remains frozen between them—and eventually dies.

The point is brutally simple: refusing to decide is still a decision.

THE PROBLEM

Business leaders rarely become stuck because they have no options. They become stuck because they have too many options and want certainty before committing to one.

They compare strategies, revise plans, gather more information, schedule another meeting, and wait for the perfect moment. Meanwhile, opportunities disappear, competitors move forward, employees lose confidence, and revenue remains stalled.

A reasonably good decision made today is often more valuable than a theoretically perfect decision made too late.

5 IDEALS

  1. Clarity Is Created Through Action

You will not always think your way into clarity. Sometimes you must act, observe the results, and allow the experience to reveal your next move.

  1. Every Decision Has a Cost

Leaders usually examine the risks of making a decision but ignore the cost of delay. Lost time, stalled revenue, confused employees, and missed opportunities are real costs.

  1. Certainty Is Not a Leadership Requirement

Leadership requires judgment, courage, and accountability. It does not require knowing exactly how everything will turn out.

  1. Reversible Decisions Should Be Made Quickly

Many business decisions are not permanent. Make the choice, test it, measure the result, and adjust when necessary.

  1. Movement Creates Momentum

Once you choose a direction, people, resources, information, and opportunities begin organizing around that decision. Nothing can organize around hesitation.

5 ACTIONS

  1. Identify one decision you have delayed for more than seven days.

  2. Write down the two or three most realistic options.

  3. Determine whether the decision is reversible or irreversible.

  4. Choose the strongest available option using the information you currently have.

  5. Take one visible action before the end of today.

CONCLUSION

Buridan’s Donkey did not fail because either option was bad. It failed because it treated the absence of a perfect choice as a reason to make no choice at all.

Do not allow your business to starve between two acceptable opportunities.

Choose. Act. Measure. Adjust.

Your next level may be waiting on the other side of a decision you already know you need to make.

TODAY’S QUESTION

What decision are you delaying because you are waiting for certainty?
