The next breakthrough may come from someone you just met—but the courage to pursue it may come from someone who has always believed in you.

Some Are Silver, the Others Gold

Success feels empty when you lose everyone who knew you before you achieved it.
Your network may open doors, but your real friends help you survive what happens behind them.

Daily Spark: Some Are Silver, the Others Gold

“Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, and the other gold.”

It is a simple childhood rhyme, but it carries an adult truth we sometimes forget.

New friends bring fresh ideas, new opportunities and different ways of looking at the world.

Old friends carry your history.

They remember who you were before the titles, the accomplishments, the disappointments and the reinventions. They know the chapters that never made it onto LinkedIn.

We need both.

In business, we are constantly told to expand our network. Meet more people. Build more connections. Find the next client, mentor, investor or strategic partner.

That matters—but relationships are not collectibles.

A thousand contacts cannot replace the handful of people who will tell you the truth, celebrate your victories without jealousy and sit beside you when there is nothing they can gain from it.

New relationships create possibilities.

Old relationships remind us who we are.

But neither silver nor gold maintains its shine without care. Friendship requires attention, gratitude and reciprocity. You cannot disappear for years and expect every relationship to remain exactly where you left it.

Today’s move: Reach out to one old friend and one newer friend. Tell them specifically why you value having them in your life.

Keep making room for new people—but never become so busy building your future that you neglect the people who helped you reach the present.

Some friends are silver.

The others are gold.

And a truly wealthy life has both.

No one is better than you, and no one is smarter than you—but life is much richer when good people walk beside you.

Keep Building
